PPP4 Spotlight: Never Not Love You
The love team kilig is a perennial favorite among most Filipino moviegoers, that is why this year’s online Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP) did not pass up the chance to include a Romance Section.
The 4th PPP, which will run from October 31 to November 15, has at least seven Romance films in its roster of more than 147 titles. Aside from Romance, the other PPP4 sections are PPP Short Films, Youth & Family, Classics, PH Oscar Entries, Genre, Bahaghari, Tribute, From The Regions, Documentaries, PPP Retro, Special Screenings, CineMarya, and PPP Premium Selection.
The PPP’s vast lineup can be enjoyed at only PHP 450, which is the Early Bird Rate for the 16-day Full Run Pass (PHP 599). The Early Bird Rate is available until October 15.
Other PPP4 subscription options are the Half Run Pass (PHP 299) for eight days, Day Pass (PHP 99), and Free Pass for the short films and public events. Starting October 16, a 30% student discount will be offered while persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens can get a 20% discount.
To give an overview of some of the PPP4 titles, the FDCP has begun the PPP4 Spotlight. For this edition, the spotlight is on the Romance film headlined by one of the most popular love teams in recent years, fondly called by the portmanteau JaDine.
“Never Not Love You” (2018)
Directed by Antoinette Jadaone
PPP4 Romance Section
This is the film that earned Nadine Lustre the Best Actress nods from the Young Critics Circle, FAMAS Awards, and Gawad Urian. And even just in the moment when she opens the film, you can see that she is already a winner.
Lustre embodies with ease the characteristics, nuances, ambitions, struggles, and other highs and lows of Joanne, a management trainee at an advertising agency who falls in love with freelance graphic artist and tattooist Gio, portrayed by James Reid.
The young lovers vow to remain together, and a career opportunity causes them to go overseas. There is so much hope and promise in their relationship, just as there is a lot of potential in their respective careers.
However, a career slump leads to several problems, including a test on the strength of their relationship. Was it too much, too soon for Gio and Joanne?
“Never Not Love You,” also written by director Jadaone, has the adorable meet-cute moment along with charming courtship clips and sweet magical scenes between Gio and Joanne.
Moreover, the romantic drama shows a more mature side of the JaDine tandem as the actors effectively exhibit raw emotions as they feel the pain and frustration of being unhappy even if they are together.
Widely touted by fans and critics as the best JaDine film to date, “Never Not Love You” does not just delve on romantic love. It also tackles the importance of staying true to oneself and standing by one’s ideals whether in a relationship or not. It’s about adulting, as well as the magic and madness that come with it.
